Mid evening the team was contacted by Oldham MRT to assist with a joint standby, in connection with the aftermath of a fire within an underground telephone cable tunnel, beneath the city centres of Manchester and Salford. ( part of the Cold War era secure telephone exchange system ). With the fire out, telephone engineers were set to enter the tunnel complex system, and GMAS requested that MRT’s go to standby, in readiness to deploy to the scene, to provide evacuation assistance to GMAS should a need arise, whilst the engineers were in the tunnel(s). ( it was reported that access was limited to two entrances only, with potentially a mile long maximum carry within the tunnel complex, should the need arise. Both teams were stood down late evening, as the tunnels were still not declared safe enough for the engineers to enter.
